Yep, here we go again. Save the date on your calendar, here comes Art Basel Hong Kong right around the corner. Art Basel has a pretty good spread across the globe at this point, of course the annual in Basel Switzerland itself, the somewhat iconic although over rated Art Basel in Miami for all of […]
Santorini is a beautiful volcanic island located between the Ios and Anafi islands from Greece. It is famous because of the active volcano, the dramatic view of the city and because of the outstanding sunsets from Oia town. The traditional and numerous villages are a delight for tourists’ eyes. You can visit some of them since they are on the island and you will find them beautiful with their immaculate street and also nice people.
If you finally decide to go to Santorini, you need to get to Athens first. From there you have two flights a day or the ferry from Piraues (great article on Ferries in Greece From Trip Advisor). In summer time there are additional flights between Santorini and other islands, and charter flights from abroad, but overall you can get to the island via Athens from everywhere. If you want to move faster in the city the only public transportation is by bus, but the system is really simple to use and well organized. Just keep in mind that busses are functional only until midnight.
The official language here is Greek, but being a tourist attraction you may find some people speaking in English. Just to be sure I advise you to keep close to you a dictionary; people will also appreciate the effort. Also the Euro is the official currency, since Greece is still a part of EU, just in case you were curious and maybe hadn’t kept up to date with the latest news.
Santorini’s weather is rarely cold but the period from December through March is marked as off-season because you might find it cooler than the rest of the year and you can encounter rains and winds. Ideal times to visit, for milder weather, prices and crowds, are April-June and September-October.
In terms of renting a place to stay, like always you get to choose from expensive to cheap, depending on how luxurious it is, the location or the period you choose. There are also a couple of options to rent something in the beautiful villages from the island.
Besides the beautiful sights of the island, the simple idea of an active volcano on it and some really popular beaches, like Black Beach, Red Beach, White Beach, Amoudi, Perivolos, Monolithos, Baxedes, Pori, Mesa pigadia, Agios georgios, I highly recommend you to visit all the historic sights but also hit some of the important to do things on my personal list. What can you do? Plenty. Santorini might seem limited, but it’s not. It has activities for those that enjoy relaxing, but also that are fond of a little bit of action. You could climb to see Ancient Thira or the monastery, scuba diving and snorkeling are also an option for active travelers and for those that are in search of more relaxing activities, a walk along the caldera from Fira to Oia is perfect.
Staying safe in Santorini is quite easy because the island is basically crime free and the only danger around there is only the sun if you don’t use sunscreen.
