Santa Rosa has always been one of those interestingly remote places for me. I grew up just an hour away from it, but it always felt as distant as places three or four hours away, as if it were more suited to a long weekend trip than a quick visit. Where I live now is […]
Given the size of the town, there are an incredible number of wonderful restaurants in Mendocino. If you’re willing to venture a little past the outskirts of the town itself, there are even more.
Somehow, though, dining in luxury never strikes me as something that quite fits the spirit of a trip here, there are lots of towns all across California with fabulous restaurants, here its location, location, location. Instead, I prefer to go to the Mendocino Market and get one of their sandwiches to go. Eating it on the beach, with the breeze in my hair and the sound of the crashing waves, feels like a better match for the overall experience, even though it inevitably involves at least one bite that’s gritty with sand, small price to pay for the scenery.
Unfortunately, the local seagulls like these sandwiches just as much as I do. On my last trip here, I ended up eating just half of mine because a crafty gull crept up behind me and dragged the other half away. By the time I noticed the theft, three or four of them were fighting over the scraps. I’ve never been in a full fledged gull fight and was in no mood to make this my first effort.
Only once have I visited Mendocino and opted for anything other than my picnic sandwich. It was several years ago, with a guy. He insisted we go to the renowned Cafe Beaujolais; I consented. The food was by far the best part of that trip, and the atmosphere’s restaurant was lovely, though, in my opinion, better suited to a large city. (The guy and I parted ways not long after, largely because we saw the world so differently.)
Couple Restaurants In Mendocino, just incase you really needed a recommendation from me:
Check out Trillium which is a perfect choice for a perfectly romantic meal, it is a restaurant and also has a couple of rooms.
The Mendocino Cafe is as you might expect your quintessential California Cuisine style restaurant
If you need a good old pub for a pint then Patterson’s is the best pick in town.
